Skiathos

This was our first holiday together, we wanted to go somewhere warm with beautiful sandy beaches, nice bars and a good atmosphere for couples.  We decided on Skiathos and we weren’t disappointed.

Skiathos is a small Greek island in the north west Aegean Sea. It is the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades group.  Skiathos is about 12 km long and 6 km wide on average. The coastline is indented with up to 65 sandy beaches, inlets, capes and peninsulas.

We rented a car to explore the entire island, the first couple of days were a little cloudy so we thought we’d take a tour, we drove the length and bredth of the island and even got lost up in the mountains.  This was when we visited Kastro (the Greek word for castle), located on a high rock, overlooking a steep cliff above the sea at the northernmost part of the island.  At its largest there were about 300 houses and 22 churches here. Today just one church remains and the ruins of a few others. Parts of the defence wall facing the main island also remain. There are also a couple of restored private houses here.

After this we aquainted ourselves with the main town and settled in for a couple of quiet drinks around the harbour.  There are some fantastic restaurants in Skiathos and the house wine goes down a treat too.  It was in one of those restaurants that we discovered the best garlic bread we’ve ever had, this was at Marias pizza place, we’ve tried to replicate it but it’s been a struggle.  It’s a folded pizza dough filled with garlic butter, feta, mozzerella and herbs.  It was so good we had to take a picture.

If you’re thinking of a beach holiday then you wont go far wrong in Skiathos, we found the beaches in the south west of the island to be the best, our favourites being Banana or koukounaries.  We particularly liked the little buddha statue that greets you as you arrive at banana beach.
